    Arelys Monge

    Arelys Monge manages coffee production on her family farm Sabana del Roble in the Valle Central of Costa Rica. The farm has been in the family since the 19th century and Arelys has fond memories of afternoons spent walking along the river streams that run through the property. In 2018, Arelys began a renovation project, replacing 30 or 40-year-old trees with new varieties. Now the family is finally seeing the fruits of this labor. In 2021, Arelys was able to process the first coffee from the new trees. In 2024, Arelys exported coffee with Bean Voyage for the first time.

    Finca Sabana del Roble & Bean Voyage

    A systems engineer by training, Arelys Monge wanted to become more involved in the day-to-day operations of Sabana del Roble and sought out ways to expand her knowledge of coffee production. In 2020, she connected with Bean Voyage, a non-profit organization that provides training, capital, and market access to smallholder women producers so they can improve farm performance, earn a thriving income, and lead sustainable lives. Bean Voyage also works to find better markets for the coffees produced and to connect producers with roasters who are also interested in sustainable relationships and fair prices. The training courses offered by Bean Voyage have been invaluable and Arelys says that she particularly appreciates their support for the local community and for women producers in particular.


    After their mother’s passing, Arelys and her siblings were drawn to the coffee farm which has been passed on through 4 generations of their family. Arelys was inspired to renovate the farm in memory of her mother. For the past several years, they have been replanting new coffee trees, planting more shade trees, and in general focusing on better ecological practices. Sustainability and quality are now at the heart of Sabana del Roble. In order to save scarce water resources, the farm is only producing natural coffees, with excellent results.
