Agroforestry and shade-grown cultivation

What makes Hacienda El Rodeo special is that Cristian Reyes and his family grow coffee in agroforestry systems or under shade plants at altitudes between 1,875 and 2,200 meters. Fifty percent of the farm is forested. The other 50% used to be pastureland and sugarcane fields. On this land, the Reyes family planted banana plants and new native trees. The bananas provide additional income and grow very quickly, which means they provide shade early on. In the long term, they will be replaced by the growing trees.

In addition to the Castillo variety, Hacienda El Rodeo also produces very high-quality Geisha. In the specialty coffee world, Geisha holds a special status. Today, it is considered one of the most famous and sought-after coffee varieties in the world.

Hacienda El Rodeo also produces coffee for the local market in Colombia. Their Gesha coffee has earned them the regional "Best Cup of Santander" prize for 2 consecutive years.

Where Geisha comes from

Its origin lies in the Gesha region of Ethiopia, where it is endemic and was originally collected from wild coffee forests.

From there, the variety made its way to Central America. For a long time, however, it was rarely planted because the plants are delicate and produce lower yields.

That changed suddenly in 2004. At the “Best of Panama” auction, a Gesha lot caused a major sensation. Its unusually floral and complex aromas impressed the jury so much that the coffee immediately gained international attention and was sold for a record price.

Since then, Gesha has been regarded as the highest-quality variety in specialty coffee.

El Rodeo Gesha

Gesha coffees are known for their aromatic clarity and elegance. They often resemble a fine tea more than classic, strong coffees.

Our El Rodeo Gesha shows exactly these characteristics: floral aromatics, bright and lively acidity, subtle fruit notes, and an elegant tea-like body.

We recommend trying this coffee with filter brewing methods such as V60 or Kalita.
