    Higuerones Natural

    Higuerones Natural

by Arelys Monge from Finca Sabana del Roble & Bean Voyage

Higuerones Natural is a natural coffee from the Valle Central of Costa Rica. It features the rare Obatá variety, which is a cross between the Timor and Villa Sarchi varieties, making it very suitable for sweet and fruity coffees. This coffee marks the first international export by Arelys Monge from Finca Sabana del Roble in Costa Rica. It’s a naturally processed coffee that we've lightly roasted to highlight its bright, gentle acidity and complex fruit flavors.

Arelys Monge manages coffee production on her family farm Sabana del Roble in the Valle Central of Costa Rica. The farm has been in the family since the 19th century and Arelys has fond memories of afternoons spent walking along the river streams that run through the property. In 2018, Arelys began a renovation project, replacing 30 or 40-year-old trees with new varieties. Now the family is finally seeing the fruits of this labor. In 2021, Arelys was able to process the first coffee from the new trees. In 2024, Arelys exported coffee with Bean Voyage for the first time.

    About Higuerones Natural

    [object Object]

When Arelys started replacing 30-40 year old trees in 2018, she chose to plant Obatá, a variety developed in Brazil in 2000, because of the variety’s high yield potential and resistance to coffee leaf rust.

The Obatá plants are located on a lot of land at the entrance to Finca Sabana del Roble, close to the traditional cedar house that is the center of the farm. This lot is called Los Higuerones. Together with Arelys, we chose the name Higuerones Natural to represent the place where Arelys’s journey into coffee production started.

Arelys has embraced natural processing as the best way to conserve scarce water resources on the finca. To top it off, this method has been giving excellent results in the cup.

Chris uses the following recipe to brew with Hario V60  :

Preparation of 24g coffee beans, ground with a setting of 17 clicks on the Timemore C3S Pro (equivalent to ~ 630 μm) with 400 ml water at a temperature of 93°C. Results in a gentle acidity with a sweetness like dried plums and roasted almonds. Avoid astringency by adjusting the grind size coarser.

The Finca Sabana del Roble is characterized by its flat terrain with majestic oak trees. An historic cedar house, typical of Costa Rica, serves as the farm's operational center. Our first microlot comes from a parcel called Los Higuerones, located at the entrance of the finca. Arelys decided to plant this plot with Obatá coffee trees.
